Instituto Paulo Montenegro
Created in 2000, by the IBOPE, the Instituto Paulo Montenegro is a non-profitable organization that has the objective to develop and execute educational projects. Education was chosen as a priority among IBOPE’s social actions since it is considered a fundamental factor to reduce the social differences and be able to, even if indirectly, improve the life conditions of most Brazilians. It is also seen as an instrument to place the country in a market that is more and more globalized and competitive. Besides from being financed by the IBOPE companies, the Instituto Paulo Montenegro has its own infrastructure and strategic plan, with defined concepts and targets. Through this initiative, IBOPE sets its position as a socially responsible company, whose services and educational projects benefits from the expertise and accumulated knowledge of more than 60 years of research in Brazil. When education was chosen as the exclusive target, the Instituto Paulo Montenegro optimized its efforts to create new educational alternatives: The Functional Literacy Indicator (INAF - Indicador de Alfabetismo Funcional) and the Our School Researches Your Opinion (NEPSO – Nossa Escola Pesquisa sua Opinião). INAF INAF, an innovative initiative in Brazil, has the objective to measure the functional literacy of the Brazilian adult population and evaluate their ability to read, write and make mathematical operations applied to their daily lives.
What are the reading, writing and mathematics abilities needed in our daily life, in our work environment and social and political participation? How many school years and what kind of educational actions guarantees a satisfactory literacy level? What other conditions favors the development of such abilities along our lifetime? Which population subgroups are in disadvantage and deserve a special attention? What would be the best strategies to elevate the population’s literacy conditions? Answers and questions like these may guide the basic educational policies, resumes and methodologies. They are also useful to guarantee self-development opportunities and professional qualification to all citizens. NEPSO NEPSO also brings an innovative proposal for the Brazilian education: diffuse the use of research as an educational instrument in public schools. This methodology invigorates the educational work, helping students and teachers. It allows, for example, to make interdisciplinary projects which involves teachers, the school and the community.
NEPSO has been applied in schools and institutions of seven Brazilian states (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Distrito Federal), and Latin America (Argentina, Chile, Colômbia and México).
Besides from the educational programs, the Instituto Paulo Montenegro assumed the task to integrate the employees of the IBOPE Group and their families in their projects. Through voluntary work, technical workshops, sports, games etc held during the regional lectures of the NEPSO program, or with their technical involvement in the INAF research. At any moment, it is possible for the employees to integrate with the actions of Instituto Paulo Montenegro. Visit the Instituto Paulo Montenegro website: www.ipm.org.br
